CurrENT Grid Compass
Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
What is the CurrENT Grid Compass
The CurrENT Grid Compass is an interactive map that provides insights into grid performance across European countries and Transmission System Operators (TSOs). At present it evaluates two dimensions: secure and stable operation costs and electricity losses.
Who is behind the CurrENT Grid Compass?
The CurrENT Grid Compass is an initiative by CurrENT, developed in collaboration with gridDigIt and supported by Breakthrough Energy. It builds on the work carried out by ACER and CEER on the development of smart grid performance indicators.
Data sources and scope
What data sources were used to calculate the key performance indicators?
You can find below the data sources used to calculate the CurrENT Grid Compass KPIs:
ACER
- Energy regulators develop guiding principles to evaluate performance of EU electricity smart grids | www.acer.europa.eu
- ACER’s Transmission capacities for cross-zonal trade of electricity and congestion management in the EU – 2024 Market Monitoring Report
- 2023 Market Monitoring Report
- Unit Investment Cost Report
CEER

Elia
ENTSO-E
- Transparency Platform
- The data relating to Total Load – Actual, Total Generation per Production Type, Redispatch costs, Redispatch volumes, Redispatch Internal quantity,Redispatch Cross-Border quantity for years 2016, 2021, 2023 are used.
- 2024 Ten Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP)
JOA: Joint Allocation Office
- JOA static grid model
- Lines, tie lines, transformers: Maximum Current Imax (A) (Periodically, Fixed, DLR, Electrical parameters),
- Transformers: Phase Shifting Properties

Could there be inaccuracies in the data used?
The CurrENT Grid Compass uses public data and the information currently available as of 1st of March 2025, but we cannot guarantee its complete accuracy since CurrENT Europe is not the direct source. It reflects the information accessible as of the 1st of March 2025, and we are open to refining it with additional reliable data in the future.
The KPIs provide an indication of grid performance based on available data as of the 1st of March 2025. If certain information is unavailable or incorrect, it may result in a lower score despite good performance results.
Does the CurrENT Grid Compass cover all European counties?
The first edition of the CurrENT Grid Compass covers a select number of European Countries, chosen on the basis of the publicly available data as 1st of March 2025. CurrENT Europe plans to expand the geographic scope and include more granular data in future editions.
What specific indicators does the CurrENT Grid Compass focus on?
The CurrENT Grid Compass evaluates grid performance based on multiple key indicators.
- Costs of efficient secure and stable operations is based on the costs for redispatch costs and volumes.
- Total level of line losses is based on the differences between injected energy onto the system and energy taken off the grid.
The KPIs are calculated by summing up the results of a subset of indicators. See the methodology section relating to each specific map for further detail on the results are calculated.
Other KPIs will be added as more maps are added to the page.
Future Plans and Updates
Do you plan to have further releases of this project?
Yes, we aim to release future editions of the CurrENT Grid Compass, expanding coverage to include different KPIs, focusing on more countries and incorporating more granular data.
How can I stay informed about updates to the CurrENT Grid Compass?
Updates and new editions of the CurrENT Grid Compass will be announced on CurrENT Europe’s website as well as through our direct mail list. Don’t miss any of CurrENT’s updates by subscribing to the mailing list here. Stakeholders are encouraged to follow CurrENT’s communications channels to stay informed.
